Memorial to the Fallen Reporters
After a quick shower to recover from the hike, it was time to find the one Bayeux site that so far had proven elusive. Reporters without frontiers has built a memorial to all the journalists killed in the line of duty since 1944. It is opposite the British cemetery but the entrance is slightly hidden so with the help of one of the other hotel guests who had visited earlier in the week, we had specific directions to find it. The site is a garden of white roses with white marble columns listing years and names. A walk around the columns is a walk through history as the names from WWII give way to those from Asia, then from the former Eastern block, then back to Asia and now with more middle eastern names. It was impossible not to be mindful of two more western names that will be added when the 2014 block is created. Some British journalists had left a poppy wreath with a personal message for one of their colleagues. It was a very special place.
