More St Joan

St Jeanne's church
After the train ride and a quick stop at the hotel, it seemed like time to head over to the site where St Jeanne was martyred. I had not wanted to include it yesterday in the frenetic new city to explore enthusiasm but of course it needed to make the sites to see. The church is actually extremely modern and the actual site of her burning is now a flower bed. The church was built in the 1970s and is in the shape of either an upside down boat or the flames that burned her-critics cannot agree. I think the former given the windows inside looking more maritime. Inside is lovely stained glass, most brand new although some small sections were taken from a destroyed church. Mass was being said in the chapel but the rest of the church was open for quiet reflection and there was a small display on St Jeanne with comments about her being religious and also being a feminist. Not sure that word existed in the 15th century and I was taken aback to realize that if I had visited when I first became interested, the site would have been totally different.

After that visit, another lovely dinner after discarding a few recommended restaurants when there was nothing on the menu to appeal to US taste buds-Normandy serves a lot of tripe - yuk, yuk, yuk. Ultimately it was more Camembert and veggies and apples all in tarts washing down by very very dry cider, a new spin on that drink.
